Legal operators spread their wings

The fast-growing legal operations group, CLOC, founded in the US, is expanding its global reach to European corporates.

One of the US’s most powerful legal industry groups has launched its European division in London this week. The Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC) invited 30 leading corporate counsel to share best practices and discuss how to drive positive change across the corporate legal ecosystem.

From the US to the UK

Headed up by CLOC founder and CEO Connie Brenton, Chief of Staff and Director of Legal Operations at NetApp along with Aine Lyons, the European CLOC lead and the VP and Deputy General Counsel, Worldwide Legal Operations at VMWare, the group, whose members hail from a range of Fortune 500 companies, has grown rapidly in the US. Members share experiences on a range of issues from managing law firms to developing innovative and creative solutions to industry issues.

Benchmarking outcomes

At the launch, the group heard from British Telecommunications (BT) General Counsel, Dan Fitz and Chris Fowler, General Counsel TSO & UK Commercial, who discussed BT’s innovation and organisational structure.  Discussions ranged from innovation and efficiency in legal services to CLOC’s Legal Operations Maturity model including real time polling, so that results can be benchmarked. A growing number of companies in Europe are developing legal operations to ensure their legal departments are supported in a range of areas from strategic planning, financial management, vendor management, data analytics, technology support, litigation support, team building and global data governance to name a few of the areas which legal operations focuses on.
