The letter, dated July 15th in Paris by AIJA president Thierry Aballea, stresses the importance of ‘respecting the rule of a law’ and calls for Obama ‘to devote your energy to getting rid of this blot on American democracy that Guantanamo represents, that time may help to erase quicker on condition that you act immediately.’
AIJA appalled
Mr Aballea wrote that the events at Guantanamo ‘have both appalled and horrified us. The decision to force-feed the prisoners has stricken us to the heart.’According to CNN, a lawsuit was filed by certain prisoners claiming that the force-feedings of the 106 prisoners on a hunger strike clash with the fasting requirements of Ramadan, the holy month that starts on July 8th. Despite inciting a torrent of controversy over the past few weeks, the U.S government earlier this month refused to put an end to the force-feeding proceedings. AIJA has 4,000 members worldwide, many from European law firms.
