Online retailer Amazon has joined the likes of Google, Facebook and Apple by hiring a high-profile privacy lawyer.

Nuala O’Connor will take the newly-created role of vice president and associate general counsel, compliance and privacy, reports the Business Insider web site. Ms O’Connor had previously held similar roles at General Electric and the US Department of Homeland Security.

Buying habits

The company has faced questions over  Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet, with Congressman Ed Markey expressing concern that the device’s web browser collects ‘an extraordinary amount of information about its users’ internet surfing and buying habits.’

However, Amazon rebuffed the initial claims, denying that its browser links ‘browsing activity to individual customers’ habits’.
