The US Department of Justice is fining at three times its 2013 level, reaching US$709 in H1 of 2014, according to A&O calculations. The European Commission has already reached nearly 75 per cent of the €1.9b it gave out in fines for all of 2013. John Terzaken, head of the A&O cartel defence practice in the US, said: ‘Many of the cases that have produced these fines are ongoing…Historically the authorities tend to post their biggest numbers at the end of the year.’ Source: Business Week
