Apple pushes for action to thwart patent lawsuits

Apple has faced 92 lawsuits in three years brought by patent assertion entities (PAEs), law firms and other entities that buy patents solely in order to earn money from alleged infringers - and is urging reform of the sector.

Apple calls for patent reform skyme

Despite the fact that it views none of the claims as valid, Apple has settled in 51 of the cases. It is now calling for reforms from the Federal Trade Commission and says that the number of firms involved has risen by 17 per cent in the five years to 2013. Apple has two full-time lawyers working on the area. In a paper filed to a court, Apple said: 'PAEs do not invent, manufacture or sell any product. Many of them do nothing more than acquire vague patents, and then use litigation or the threat of litigation to negotiate royalties that are far larger than what the patents warrant.'
