Apple strikes HTC deal to end patent war

Californian technology giant Apple has agreed a 10-year licensing deal with Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, marking the first time the iPhone creator has settled a patent case with a smartphone maker using Google's Android operating system.

Finally, a settlement

The Financial Times reports that HTC and Apple yesterday announced a ‘global settlement that includes the dismissal of all current law suits’.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the settlement will usher away any fears either company had of devices being taken off of shelves as disputes worked their way through the courts.

Innovation v litigation

Industry analysts have speculated that Apple will now focus all of its legal efforts against Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung, which the Cupertino-based company has already clashed with across the globe – including a $1 billion patent verdict in Apple’s favour in August.
Apple chief executive Tim Cook said: ‘We are glad to have reached a settlement with HTC. We will continue to stay laser-focused on product innovation.’
Peter Chou, chief executive of HTC, said his company was ‘pleased to have resolved [the] dispute with Apple, so [we] can focus on innovation instead of litigation’.
