Department store chain Macy’s has announced that Elisa Garcia will replace incumbent chief legal officer Dennis Broderick when he retires from the company on 1 October after 29 years. Ms Garcia brings experience working in-house with large-scale chain retailers into her new role, having served as EVP and general counsel at Office Depot from 2007 before being named as the company’s chief legal officer in 2013. Previously, she served as EVP, general counsel and secretary at Dominoes Pizza.

Meanwhile, BG Group deputy general counsel Thomas Smith is leaving the company after it was acquired in a £35bn deal by Royal Dutch Shell in February. Mr Smith is taking up the role of energy and supply services general counsel at Centrica after holding the deputy GC role at BG Group for the last 18 months and spending the last decade with the company. Former BG Group general counsel Graham Vinter retired from the company prior to its combination with Shell, while his successor Tom Melbye Eide has become executive vice president and GC for Shell’s upstream business following the tie-up.

Hertz Global Holdings has confirmed Rick Frecker as its new executive vice president and general counsel after appointing him as acting general counsel in April. Mr Frecker has been a member of the Hertz in-house team since 2008 and previously held the role of vice president and deputy general counsel. He replaces former GC Thomas Sabatino Jnr who left Hertz earlier this year to become EVP and GC at Fortune 100 consumer health care and insurance company Aetna.

Former global oil major Gulf Oil has named Chris Paul as its new general counsel. Mr Paul joins Gulf Oil from Blueknight Energy Partners, where he served as chief legal officer and general counsel. Since its 1985 takeover by Chevron, the Gulf Oil brand has continued as a logistics operator for the oil industry in the northeastern United States.

Finally, British garden supplies retailer Wyevale Garden Centres has appointed Elizabeth Murray as its new general counsel. Ms Murray is replacing outgoing general counsel Elizabeth Ward, who has held the role since 2014. Ms Murray has held a variety of in-house and private practice roles across Manchester, Birmingham and London, including two years’ experience in-house with fellow British do-it-yourself and gardening retailer Focus DIY.
