Sir Hector Sants, head of compliance and government and regulatory relations at Barclays Bank, is taking leave to recover from 'exhaustion and stress' after nine months in the job.

His doctor diagnosed him with 'exhaustion and stress' and urged him to take leave of at least three months, according to The Daily Telegraph. If he continued to work he was warned that he 'risked more serious consequences to his health'. His medical problems will be cited as further evidence by those who believe it that, as a minimum, general counsel in many companies need to split the role of top legal adviser and top compliance officer. His work is being split between subordinates until his return. He is staying on full pay. He is an investment banker, rather than a lawyer, by background.
