The company has been found 'grossly negligent' over its role in the Gulf oil disaster which saw 11 rig workers lose their lives.

Deepwater Horizon rig explosion in 2010 sees BP facing a potential $18bn fines

Oil company BP is facing the additional fines after New Orleans federal judge found it was grossly negligent, a charge which the company had always rejected whilst admitting to negligence. US District Judge Carl Barbier said that the company was 'reckless' in the run-up to the disaster and guilty of 'wilful misconduct'. He pointed to numerous instances of cost-cutting by BP - saying some 'evince an extreme deviation from the standard of care and a conscious disregard of known risks.' The finding is the latest legal set-back for BP which had set aside $3.5bn to cover penalties under the US Clean Water Act. US companies Halliburton and Transocean were found negliglent and will not face the additional penalties imposed on BP due to the gross negligence finding. BP is appealing the decision.
