BP will seek to recover some compensation payouts in Gulf

BP will seek to recover compensation paid to Gulf of Mexico claimants which have not suffered loss.

BP waits to see if its compensation challenge will go to a higher court Jeff Whyte

As the oil company disclosed its Q2 results, chief executive Bob Dudley said that another US $200 million has been added to the sums set aside to deal with the aftermath of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The total is now £42.4 billion. However, Mr Dudley warned that this provision is unlikely to be enough and that 'additional amounts' are expected to be added in Q3. He also said that the company would seek to get back compensation paid out to businesses which BP claims have not suffered loss. He said, according to the Daily Telegraph, that BP was 'digging in' for the long haul to reduce the flow of payments going out and to recover ones that should not have been made.

Too freely

BP is waiting to hear if it can take its challenge to the existing compensation process to a higher court. It believes that compensation is being given out too freely by the administrators set up under a US court to distribute payouts to successful claimants. BP had estimated that it would pay £7.8 billion under this arrangement but it believes that the total could be double that if the present system adopted by the administrators continues.
