British judge first to be named and shamed under new rules

An employment court judge has become the first member of the British judiciary to be named and shamed following implementation last week of beefed up disciplinary rules.

Judge Neeta Amin was given a public sanctioning, according to The Lawyer newspaper, for a delayed judgment, failure to meet minimum sitting requirements in 2009 and failure to respond to correspondence from the UK’s employment tribunal.
The reprimand was publicised by the eight-year-old Office for Judicial Complaints (OJC), as the naming-and-shaming rules came into force at the beginning of this month. According to the newspaper, findings will be released on the OJC following disciplinary rulings in relation to judges.
In the past, British judges were named only in the most serious cases involving suspension by the Ministry of Justice.
