Business warned over disgruntled rivals

Barrister Edward Jenkins has explained to Russian businesses how competitors can often trigger investigations into rival businesses.

Competitors use of investigations was a matter of discussion at English Law Week in Moscow Shchipkova Elena

Speaking at the English Law Week in Moscow, he said: 'You think once you've got the contract, that's the end of it. But the aggrieved competitor doesn't walk away and cry in the corner these days. The aggrieved competitor says - 'Well my product was actually rather good... How on earth did they get the contract?' [The competitor] starts to investigate, and then finds that the successful contractor was seen out to dinner with the relevant government minister - and inquiries follow from that.' Mr Jenkins also described the way national governments and other bodies increasingly co-ordinate with each other. The EU Commission, he said, tended to be well-informed on competition issues and is accustomed to working alongside state competition bodies. Source: Russian Legal Information Authority
