Campaigners lobby for equality agency lawyers to play fair

Civil rights activists in the US are pressing a leading equality body to clarify the rules under which lawyers at federal agencies involve themselves in discrimination complaint processes.
Corporate Counsel magazine reports that a coalition of lawyers and other groups is lobbying the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to issue guidance on the process this year. The report says campaigners have been pressing the commission for the best part of the past decade and frustration is running high.
The main issue, according to the campaigners, is that some general counsel at federal agencies are, reports the magazine, ‘getting involved in federal discrimination investigations prematurely – before a formal hearing had been requested by the employee who filed the complaint’.
