Canadian legal aid lawyer jailed after dispute with judge

Ian Savage, president of the Calgary Defence Lawyers Association, spent three hours in a holding cell after a dispute with a judge over an impaired driving case.

Mr Savage is a leading campaigner on legal aid. Judge Pat McIlhargey, presiding over the case, refused a double request from Mr Savage for a mistrial and for a different judge to handle it. After discussions with Mr Savage, the judge continued with the hearing and then ordered the sheriff to escort Mr Savage from the courtroom. The sheriff then arrested him and took him to the court’s holding cell.

Calgary Chief Crown prosecutor Lloyd Robertson has said that his office will not be investigating Mr Savage or bringing charges against him. Source: Calgary Herald
