Civil cases face four-year delay on appeal in Ireland

Civil cases are taking an 'unacceptable' four years to get to appeal in the Supreme Court, according to Irish member of parliament and barrister Michael McNamara.

Joining in a debate on whether a Court of Appeal should be introduced to act as a filter between the High Court and the Supreme Court, the Labour party member said that the proposed new layer would play a crucial role. He said, according to the Independent: 'In recent years there has been a huge rise in the number of appeals but the size of the Supreme Court has remained the same. The result is a huge backlog of appeals before the Supreme Court, which are clogging up the system and creating unacceptable delays.'
