Controversy in Korea over hiring of private law firm

A state exam body has provoked surprise at appointing Seol-based Lee & Co, advisers to Samsung, to support it over complaints that exam candidates may have been denied university entry over an alleged error.

KICE seek private law firm advice over incorrect marking allegations Pakawat Suwannaket

The Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE) would have appointed the Korea Government Legal Service (KGLS) if it had been following the usual route. However, KICE has taken on one of the top three private law firms in the country to advise it over allegations that its exam markers gave points for a wrong answer on an exam. The three points given for this answer are enough to make the difference between getting accepted for university or not. Fifty high school students have not begun legal proceedings against KICE.

Cheaper than private firms

An official for the government lawyers said: 'Attorneys of KGLS might be the most knowledgeable about administration procedures because they deal primarily with administrative litigation. Of course, the expenses vary from case to case, but the cost is way cheaper than private law firms.' KICE has said that it will publish how much it pays in legal fees over the issue. It said in a statement: 'Government organizations are not required to choose lawyers from the KGLS.' Source: Korea Times
