Global online marketplace eBay has hired Samantha Wellington as its next chief legal officer, replacing former legal head Marie Oh Huber, who left the company in June.
Wellington is joining from US human resources tech business TriNet, where she was CLO and executive vice president of business affairs. At eBay, Wellington will oversee the company’s global legal department including government relations, IP, employment, litigation and regulatory work across all parts of its business. She will take up the position on 7 October and report directly to CEO Jamie Iannone.
Iannone said: “Samantha has successfully led multifaceted teams and navigated complex legal and regulatory environments throughout her career. Her expertise will be invaluable as we continue to innovate and grow our global marketplace while ensuring we meet our legal and ethical responsibilities.”
Wellington spent eight years at TriNet, having originally joined as associate general counsel before becoming CLO in 2018. She previously spent 12 years at software giant Oracle, almost eight of them as managing counsel for corporate securities and acquisitions. Before that she had a brief spell at the Australian Communications and Media Authority, having started her career as legal counsel at Foxtel in Australia.
Oh Huber, meantime, left eBay in June after nine years with the company to “pursue a new chapter in her career, while exploring personal interests and passions”, according to a memo sent to eBay staff by Iannone back in March.
In the memo, Iannone wrote: “In her nine years as general counsel, Marie helped to guide the company through numerous changes, including shifts in leadership and pivotal transactions that allowed us to refocus on our core marketplace. Marie has developed a best-in-class, global legal and government relations team that navigates a complex market and manages increased competition, geopolitical challenges, and the ever-evolving regulatory landscape. We are grateful for Marie’s many accomplishments over the years.”
Prior to joining eBay, Oh Huber was SVP for legal and corporate relations at Agilent Technologies and corporate counsel at Hewlett Packard before that. She started her legal career in private practice at defunct firm Dewey Ballantine.
