Reports are swirling that international firm Eversheds and Harry Elias are in talks over a potential merger, though a spokesperson from Eversheds has declined to comment until 'there is something tangible to report.' A union between the two firms would significantly expand Eversheds' practice in Singapore, where it opened its first office in 2009. Currently, Eversheds has just eight lawyers in Singapore under the leadership of regional managing partner Oommen Mathew. By contrast, Harry Elias has 56 fee-earners in its practice, including 20 partners.

Global expansion

Led by managing partner Philip Fong, Harry Elias has a strong reputation in Singapore for its dispute resolution practice and impressive family and matrimonial law practice. The firm specialises in construction, corporate and cross-border deals, including considerable clout in international arbitration. Eversheds has flagged developing its Asia offering as a key component of its global growth strategy, as well as establishing a local tie-up in the US. Merger talks between Eversheds and US outfit Foley & Lardner were called off by the latter in November. Sources: The Lawyer; Legal Business; Law Society Gazette
