Ex-Cleary lawyer heads Lending Club $650m float

Renaud Laplanch, the French former securities lawyer, is the brains behind Lending Club and its much anticipated float on the New York Stock Exchange next week.

Existing investors are expected to make tens of millions of dollars when the innovative, disruptive peer-to-peer lender raises a sum expected to be in the region of US$650m. The float of the San Francisco-based company is seen as marking a milestone in the development of this sector.

From Paris to New York

Renaud Laplance, 44, is the largest shareholder and could find his holding worth $160m if the shares are valued at the latest guide price. He studied in France and at the London Business School, and worked at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton as a securities lawyer between 1995 and 1999, first in Paris and then in New York.
