In an unexpected twist in events, the football governing body Fifa has lodged a criminal complaint with Swiss prosecutors over the process which saw Russia and Qatar winning the rights to stage the World Cup in 2018 and 2022. Fifa said the complaint relates to 'the possible misconduct of individual persons' and could related to 'internal transfers of assets with connections to Switzerland'. Unlike Fifa, the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland can require people connected with the events to be interviewed.
Erroneous
Fifa is giving the Swiss a copy of the report of Michael Garcia, the US lawyer. His report on the subject has not been published and last week he said that a summary report put out by Fifa contains 'numerous materially incomplete and erroneous representations of the facts and conclusions'.
