Firms prepare to battle over Berezovsky fallout

Addleshaw Goddard is set to challenge magic circle firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer over a £5 million bill for the defence of Russian mining tycoon Vasily Anisimov, stemming from the dispute between oligarchs Boris Berezovsky and Roman Abramovich.

Boris Berezovsky: 'inherently unreliable'

Although Mr Abramovich was the main target of Mr Berezovsky’s claims, a number of other parties joined the case as defendants because they were facing separate Chancery claims.

No appeal

The action comes soon after Addleshaws reached a settlement with Mr Abramovich’s team at the London office of US global firm Skadden Arps over its £40m bill, which sources close to the case claim included an £8m disbursement fee for former Brick Court silk Jonathan Sumption QC, who has since joined the Supreme Court bench, reports The Lawyer newspaper.
The Lawyer reports there will be no appeal attempt following Mrs Justice Gloster’s devastating verdict, in which she dismissed Mr Berezovky’s allegations as unfounded. She said: ‘I found Mr Berezovsky an unimpressive, and inherently unreliable, witness, who regarded truth as a transitory, flexible concept, which could be moulded to suit his current purposes.’
