Former G-man mergers with Philly firm

The law firm of the lawyer who conducted a recent damning enquiry into sexual abuses at a top US college football programme is to merge with leading Philadelphia-based national practice Pepper Hamilton.

FBI HQ: former director oversees merger deal

Freeh Sporkin & Sullivan is an eight-partner white-collar crime boutique practice run by former FBI director Louis Freeh. Mr Freeh – who is also a former US federal judge – recently concluded an investigation into incidents of sexual abuse by the head football coach at Penn State University, Jerry Sandusky. That report was highly critical of an internal investigation into the matter, which was conducted by the unvierstiy’s general counsel, former US Supreme Court Justice Cynthia Baldwin.

White collar crime

According to a report in the Washington Post newspaper, the merger – which is set to be finalised from the beginning of September -- is an attempt by the Philadelphia firm to boost its white collar crime capabilities in the US capital. The smaller firm has offices in Washington DC, Delaware and New York City.
Pepper’s first non-lawyer chief executive, Scott Green, told the newspaper that the merged firm intended to launch a recruitment drive in Washington. ‘We’ve got great capability already in intellectual property, health and pharma, securities enforcement, and would like to continue to grow those practices,’ Mr Green said.
