Top 50 UK national firm Freeths posted double-digit revenue growth for the 2023/24 financial year, supported by stellar performance across its key practice areas including disputes.

Turnover rose 13% to £145.5m, continuing the upward momentum seen over the past five years where revenue growth has averaged more than 10% through client work with the likes of Aldi, Mercedes-Benz UK, Tarmac, Experian and Lloyds Bank. The latest results follow the firm’s expansion into Scotland last year when it opened its first office outside of England in Glasgow.

The firm said it has also expanded across its main practice areas including M&A, disputes, restructuring and insolvency, real estate, and environmental and energy work. The dispute resolution team, for instance, has grown 29% over the past year, with disputes partner James Hartley leading on the firm’s work helping secure justice for the sub-postmasters wrongly accused in the Post Office Horizon IT scandal.

Freeths was appointed by the government in 2022 to oversee a compensation scheme for victims of what has since been labelled by the Criminal Cases Review Commission as the UK’s most widespread miscarriage of justice.

Karl Jansen, Freeths national managing partner, said: “As we report on another year of strong performance, our success has enabled us to invest strategically in the future of the business. This includes our investment in the latest market leading technologies such as AI, helping to enhance our performance across the firm, and yielding significant benefits for our clients. The depth and breadth of our national practice, which now includes Scotland, has helped us to become one of the UK’s leading law firms.”

The firm has made 14 lateral partner hires over the past year, including real estate partner Paul Lloyd from Gowling WLG and construction and engineering partner Matt Collingwood-Cooper from Addleshaw Goddard. Earlier this month it also launched a new IP practice in Bristol with the arrival of managing associate Dan Cahill from Ashfords.

Earlier this year, the firm also became the largest UK law firm to receive B Corporation certification, underscoring its commitment to ESG. It is also working with environmental company Planet Mark to help the firm create a net-zero plan.
