The case could have united internet users who wanted to sue Google over claims that it illegally scanned their private email messages in Gmail accounts. Experts including Professor Deborah Hensler of Stanford Law School said that the case could have become ‘the largest lawsuit ever’.

Judge Lucy Koh, sitting in San Jose, stopped the case going ahead as a class action. Her judgement will be closely scrutinised as she is also due to hear privacy actions against Yahoo! Inc and LinkedIn. These cases also involve hundreds of millions of users. Plaintiffs have argued in the Google case that each person would be eligible for damages of US$100 a day for violations of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. This would make the Google case potentially worth ‘trillions of dollars’. Source: The Daily Herald
