Grenada threatens jail for 'offensive' emails

The parliament in Grenada has introduced a law on press freedom which gives a maximum penalty of a year in jail for people sending 'offensive' emails, tweets or other internet messages.

The Electronic Crimes Act makes illegal the posting of information on websites or social media if it is known to be untrue and posted with the aim of causing 'annoyance…insult…and ill will'. Wesley Gibbings, president of the Association of Media Workers, in Trinidad is quoted in The Guardian as saying that the law is 'a travesty and in direct contravention of the principle and guarantee of free expression and press freedom'.
