The IT giant has now begun court proceedings to challenge a US$800 m tax demand from the state. Vodafone and Shell have also been involved in tax disputes in the country. Ketan Dalal, head of tax and regulatory services at PwC, told the Financial Times: 'India continues to be an attractive investment destination, but the weight of tax disputes and the related uncertainty over long-winded litigation is becoming a serious concern for international investors. Persistent tax litigation against multinational corporations, retrospective tax amendments and lack of alignment with global tax practices has become a growing deterrent for global investors.'
