Indian Bar raises 'fake lawyer' warning

An Indian state Bar Council has alerted the legal profession to the possibility of 'fake' lawyers working amongst them following the arrest of a man who had been able to dupe the system for at least a year and a half.

Kerala: lawyer authenticity checks

The Times of India reports that T S Hariharan acted as a lawyer, practiced in the Kerala court and moved around with other legal professionals in the city despite having no qualification and never enrolling with the Kerala Bar Council.

Authenticity check

Bar Council of Kerala secretary Ajayan Karunakaran said: ‘We could not believe that someone would dare to take the legal system for a ride. According to the prevailing situation, anybody can practice as a lawyer in any of the lower courts by creating a fake enrolment numbers of the bar council or by using the enrolment number usually known as "K number" of someone else.’
The Bar Council admitted that there was no system in place to check the authenticity of an advocate unless someone complained against a person, but an online facility is being created to allow K numbers to be checked with a photo and other details.
