Indian courts slow down arrival of foreign law firms

The Indian judiciary has been grappling with the question of whether to permit foreign lawyers to practice in India for more than two decades Supreme Court of India, New Delhi

The Supreme Court of India has now allowed two appeals to go ahead against decisions which would have helped foreign practices to enter. The appeals are against decisions in the High Courts of Madras and Bombay. The complexity of the issue is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that the Bar Council of India is the appellant in the Madras case and the respndent in the Bombay case.
