The Indian government is to engage with telecoms companies after a flood of lawsuits resulted in an 85 per cent fall in overseas investment in the sector.
Minister Kapil Sibal will meet with the owners of the companies to discuss how to deal with spate of litigation which sees more than a dozen lawsuits from operators and the Department of Telecommunications over a wide variety of cases. These range from wrongful termination of licenses to purchases of mobile-airwaves beyond the legal limit, Bloomberg reported.
Constructive approach
Mr Sibal told Bloomberg that he would listen to the companies ‘as to where are the areas in litigation that needs to be attended to. I don’t know exactly what the problem is.’ He said the Indian government would be ‘extremely constructive' about fixing the problem. Mr Sibal oversees both the Communications sector and the Law Ministry.
