Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party state president and Uttar Pradesh chief minister yesterday repeated that state government promises made to lawyers would be fulfilled.
Mr Yadav echoed his previous comments at a meeting attended by a host of senior lawyers, including national president of Samajwadi Adhivakta Sangh, Gaurav Bhatia.
Budget boost
According to The Times of India, the state government has made a budgetary allocation of millions of dollars for a lawyer welfare fund in the financial year 2012-13. Mr Bhatia contrasted the amount with a much lower figure allegedly committed by the previous regime of Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Mr Akhilesh claimed that his was the only political party to afford importance to the legal profession, initiating various welfare schemes for lawyers.
