The BBC reports that the proposed Online Safety Bill would require users to ‘opt in’ and prove they are over 18 if they wish to view adult material.
However, critics have suggested that the tough approach could stop people accessing helpful information on sexual health, abuse and sexual identity.
Regulation
The proposals are unlikely to become law, but government advisors have said that they hope ISPs will act without the need for regulation.
Baroness Howe, - who introduced the new legislation – said that clear changes top the law are essential. She said: ‘While I recognise that the government has shown an interest in addressing this challenge, it is far from clear to me that their voluntary approach is working or is likely to.’
