Italian prosecutors 'wasted money' in Knox trial

Two Italian prosecutors who staked their reputations on securing a life sentence for US student Amanda Knox after claiming she killed Briton Meredith Kercher are now themselves being investigated over a video they put to jurors during the trial.

Perugia: scene of the murder

The Daily Telegraph reports that Giuliano Mignini and Manuela Comodi face accusations from the Umbria audit court of wasting €182,000 of public money on a controversial 3D video recreation of the murder. The crude production was shown in the original 2009 trial, which saw Ms Knox gaoled for 26 years and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito for 25 years.

Dramatically cleared

Ms Knox and Mr Sollecito were both dramatically cleared of the killing last October when pivotal DNA evidence was found to be flawed, and a third person – unemployed drifter Rudy Guede – was sentenced to 16 years for the 2007 murder of the British student.

Mr Mignini – described as ‘gung-ho’ by The Independent newspaper – led the prosecution in the first trial and also appeared at the second, despite accusations of abuse of office in a separate case.

Outlandish remarks

In both trials, commentators remarked on what many viewed as Mr Mignini’s outlandish remarks on the defendants’ motivation and personality traits, despite having little or no evidence. Last October, according to The Independent report, appeal court judge Claudio Pratillo Hellman criticised the conduct of investigators after Mr Knox’s arrest. ‘Her rights were ignored and she was not even appointed a lawyer, a right which she had, seeing as she was being accused of a serious crime.’
