Winnipeg in Manitoba: scandal over harassment allegations

According to The Globe and Mail newspaper, Jack King told a Canadian Judicial Council inquiry: ‘I was told by some of my friends ... that they were hearing from people versions of events, sometimes quite lurid… It was quite well-known.’
The inquiry will decide whether Judge Douglas -- associate chief justice in the Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench – should keep her position after a controversial incident that began with her husband’s treatment of a client.

Explicit pictures

In 2003, when Judge Douglas and Mr King were family specialist lawyers at Winnipeg-based Thompson Dorfman Sweatman, Mr King posted explicit pictures of Judge Douglas on the internet and also sent e-mails to a client – Alexander Chapman – asking him to have sex with the judge.
Mr Chapman complained to the firm, leading to Mr King paying him a settlement of CAN$25,000. However, Mr Chapman broke the deal in 2010 and complained to the judicial council, insisting Judge Douglas played a role in the harassment.
Judge Douglas – who is yet to testify – allegedly did not disclose the matter on her application for a judicial post, which specifically asked whether there was anything in her past that could embarrass her or the judiciary.
The case continues.
