K&L Gates boosts Hong Kong practice with corporate hire

The Hong Kong office of global law firm K&L Gates has hired Carolyn Sng as a partner in the corporate practice. She joins K&L Gates from Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson.

Ms Sng advises financial institutions and corporations on M&A, private equity and capital market deals in Asia and Hong Kong. She also acts for underwriters, investment bankers and public and private corporations on restructurings, corporate finance and private equity deals. David K.Y. Tang, K&L Gates’ Asia managing partner, said: ‘The Asia capital markets have picked up in the past few months and Carolyn’s arrival will certainly help in handling that increased deal flow.’

Fried Frank office closures

Fried Frank announced in January that it was closing its offices in Shanghai and Honk Kong, in effect pulling the firm out of Asia. The offices are expected to formally close by the end of this month and the majority of Fried Frank’s partners in Hong Kong have joined other firms since the announcement. Corporate partners Douglas Freeman and Victor Chen joined Paul Hastings in April, while the firm’s former Hong Kong disputes team, comprising partner Alfred Wu, senior consultant Philip Nunn and three associates, left for Norton Rose Fulbright in the same month.
