Lawyer launches billable hour appeal for refugees

11KBW silk Sean Jones has begun an appeal on Just Giving requesting lawyers donate a billable hour to support Save the Children's work for refugees.

The appeal comes after a week of harrowing images of the refugee crisis in Europe hasan eroglu

Mr Jones launched the appeal yesterday and by 10am had already raised £15,400, more than twice the initial target of £7,500. He is asking that lawyers donate the equivalent of one billable hour, though it is written on the appeal page that: ‘Not everyone can give, we know. If you cannot please deploy your advocacy skills to nag someone else into doing so.’

Mr Jones told The Lawyer: ‘The refugee crisis is real, urgent and claiming lives. It creates injustices of such a scale and at such a rate that lawyers naturally feel a need to engage with the situation. I know that lawyers are often passionate about charitable causes but the speed and generosity of the response to this appeal has still overwhelmed me.’ Sources: The Lawyer; JustGiving
