The head of Australian lawyers association has apologised for an article with an image of saluting Nazis. Gordon Bell

The article by Russell Goldflam appeared in the January edition of Balance, the magazine of the Northern Territory Law Society. Mr Goldflam is the head of its Criminal Lawyers Association. He explained: 'Mr Elferink has specifically taken umbrage at the superimposition of the article (which included criticism of a comment he had made) on a photograph depicting a crowd of people delivering the Nazi salute…As Mr Elferink courteously but firmly explained to me, it was offensive to associate him in this way with the Nazi regime.'The article had criticised Mr Elferink for suggesting that politicians would change the laws on sex offenders if court decisions did not deliver the results they wanted. The article pointed to Nazi Germany as a place where judicial independence had been impaired. Mr Goldflam has now made a clear apology, adding: 'I have no doubt that John Elferink is sincerely committed to securing the peace, order and good government of the Northern Territory, and moreover, I accept that his concerns on this specific issue are both clear and proper: the protection of the community, and the protection of the public purse.'
