Legal battle looms over US energy regs

The US energy sector is gearing up to go to court over regulations on carbon dioxide emissions which are being proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency.

In effect, the proposed regulations would limit the permissible level of emissions to such a degree that new coal-fired plants would be illegal without significant change. New plants would need to capture and store about 40 per cent of current emission levels, rather than releasing them into the atmosphere. Mike Duncan, president of the American Coalition for Clean Coal Energy told the Financial TImes: 'This one will be settled in the courts. I have no doubt at all about that.'
