Legal teams poised to dispute US election results

The lawyers are hovering as the race tightens up between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Both campaigns are ensuring that they are positioned to challenge the election results as was the case in 2000 when George W Bush won Florida’s 29 electoral votes by a razor-thin margin.

Legal Team

Ben Ginsberg, who headed the legal team for George Bush’s earlier campaigns,  is heading Governor Romney’s legal team whilst former White House counsel Robert Bauer is now chief legal counsel for President Obama.
With every vote counting, legal teams for both campaigns are poised to intervene at the first sign of technical difficulties, voter suppression or illegal activity. ‘We’ve retained or opened pipelines to the nation’s top experts on voting systems, registration databases, ballot design, student voting and provisional ballots,’ an Obama campaign official told the Washington Post.

Political strategy

‘Election law has become a part of the candidates’ political strategy,’ said Richard Hasan, professor at the University of California at Irvine and author of ‘The Voting Wars’.
