Liability for Dewey partner loans to be decided in High Court

London's High Court is due to decide in December if individual Dewey & LeBoeuf partners are responsible for loans they took out with Barclays Bank or whether the estate of the failed firm is liable.

Barclays is claiming repayments from 50 former partners for the loans, including Charles Landgraf, former managing partner of the Washington DC office, from whom the bank is seeking US$486,000. Last week, the High Court held that he should be given the chance to argue that the loan was taken out to keep the firm going rather than for his personal needs. In total, the bank is seeking restitution of US$15m from the partners.
