The Advocates Association of Sarawak (AAS) said it would follow up on the lawyer, identified as Alvin Chong, who featured in the covert video by environmental exploitation activist Global Witness (GW).
Foreign investors
According to the Malaysian Insider, Mr Chong allegedly represented sisters Fatimah Abdul Rahman and Norlia Abdul Rahman who were recorded in the video.
Both are daughters of former state chief minister Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’akub and first cousins of the incumbent CM Taib.
In the video, undercover GW investigators, posing as foreign investors, recorded a conversation relating to the purchase of Sarawak land for hefty profit - which the environmental campaigner added would impact thousands of the indigenous people.
'Strictly hypothetical'
Mr Chong was allegedly recorded giving details on dealing with real property gains taxes (RPGT) and the 51-per-cent Bumiputera equity requirement.
His firm, Alvin Chong and Partners, has issued a statement which said: ‘We categorically deny our Mr Chong acted as legal spokesperson for the alleged party.
‘We deny any discussions to allegedly evade tax and if there were any purported discussions these were strictly hypothetical.’
Mr Taib alleged that those in the video were promoting themselves as his agents to solicit favours.
