Top 15 US firm Mayer Brown has promoted 39 lawyers to its partnership, with a further 12 being promoted to counsel.

The round is slightly smaller than the previous two years 65- and 53-strong rounds, and saw promotions across eight practice areas and 13 offices globally.

In the aggregate the round included 26 women, or 51% of the total, roughly in line with the past two rounds that saw women make up 47% and 55% of the total respectively.

Like last year, banking and finance and litigation and dispute resolution saw the most promotions, with 14 and 13 respectively. Corporate and securities had nine, with the remainder spread between the firm’s tax, real estate, employment and benefits, IP and restructuring practices.

In terms of region, the cohort was heavily weighted toward the US, where 35 lawyers were promoted to partner and counsel roles including 13 in the firms Chicago headquarters. The Chicago promotions follow an 11-strong capital markets and M&A team led by the former co-head of Mayer Browns capital markets practice, Edward Best, leaving the firm for Willkie Farr & Gallagher in August.

Meantime New York saw 10 promotions, five got the nod in Washington DC and the rest were spread between Houston and Los Angeles (two apiece) and Salt Lake City, Charlotte and Northern California (one each).

London had the most promotions outside of the US, with nine, including Paul Whitfield-Jones and Mark Hills making partner in the litigation and dispute resolution practice and Jessica Kolhorns elevation to partner in the corporate and securities team. The Europe promotions were rounded out with four in Frankfurt and another in Paris.

Elsewhere one lawyer was promoted in Rio de Janeiro, with the round completed with Fred Harouns promotion to partner in Dubai.

Jon Van Gorp, chair of Mayer Brown, said: “These exceptional lawyers have distinguished themselves through their commitment to client service, teamwork and innovation – qualities that have made Mayer Brown a special firm since its inception and continue to distinguish us among the top echelon of international law firms.”
