New York ups legal spend to 1pc of budget

The city of New York spent 40% more on settlements and other legal costs in the last fiscal year, with a big increase coming under new mayor Bill de Blasio.

The annual accounts show a legal spend of US$732m - but it can be argued that another $87m should be added to the figure. The 1% total figure means that it spends more in this area than for parks, recreation and libraries combined. Mr de Blasio is seen as being similar to predecessor Mike Bloomberg in having a tendency to settle rather than to continue fights in the courts.  Source: New York Post
