Over 3,000 lawyers stage strike in Gujarat

The lawyers have kept away from the courts as part of a three-day protest over the physical allocation of criminal court cases in Surat.

While the area has been promised new, separate court buildings for criminal and civil cases, interim measures have meant that the criminal cases are being moved to the district collector's complex for the time being. The Surat District Bar Association is unhappy with the plan and has requested a rethink. Lawyer Kalpesh Desai said: 'There are absolutely no facilities for the lawyers to sit there. A new court complex will be ready in another eight months' time. It would have been better if the criminal courts had been shifted to the new complex whenever it got ready.'
