Paddy Power dices with the law

Cheeky bookmaker Paddy Power sets the onion challenge for a famous Chelsea footballer and refuses to play ball with image rights.

The onion challenge

Brazen Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has taken on Chelsea Football Club and its oligarch owner by posting a giant billboard outside the club’s stadium mocking a star player. Chelsea has so far failed to obtain an order to have the advert removed on image rights grounds because it is not situated on their property, reports the Daily Mail.

Onion yer bike

The giant poster, which takes aim at Chelsea’s £50 million flop Fernando Torres, reads: ‘Fernando, we’ve got an onion bag you can actually find. It’s in the burger van mate. Get your hair net on.’ The Irish firm has already targeted other players who have not lived up to their hype, including Arsenal’s Andrey Arshavin, Peter Odemwingie of West Brom, Aston Villa’s Darren Bent and Jose Bosingwa of QPR.

They've got previous

The bookmaker is also famous for pulling stunts in other sporting events, such as erecting Hollywood Hills-style adverts at Cheltenham and the 2010 Ryder Cup.
Paddy Power also paid an £80,000 fine on behalf of Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner after he displayed his Paddy Power pants after scoring at the Euro 2012 football tournament.
