Patent company sees litigation costs double

A patent licenser has suffered major losses as its litigation exposure doubled.

Patent licenser Wi-Lan has gone from a profit of Can$2.2m to a loss of $6.5m , comparing Q3 2012 to Q3 2013, as its litigation expenses have more than doubled. The Canadian company - which licenses the rights to patents in its portfolio - has seen litigation costs increase to $14m this quarter. In a continuing dispute with Sony Mobile, Ericsson and others, it recently appeared in a US district court in Texas and lost, according to Financial Post.
