The New York judge’s decision relates to a dispute going back decades between the oil company and a group of Ecuadorian farmers and villagers who claim that their land was polluted by Chevron. The Ecuadorian individuals were assisted by plaintiffs lawyer Steven Donziger.
Fraud
They had secured a US$9.5b damages claim but - in another US District Court judgement, in March - it was held that this judgment had been fraudulently obtained. Steven Donziger does not work at Patton Boggs but Chevron allege that the law firm may have concealed some fraudulent steps that he is alleged to have taken. Patton Boggs denies these claims.
Nine partners
The law firm is currently in merger discussions with Squire Sanders. It denies that the exit of nine partners recently will affect its merger plans. Source: ABA
