Pope opens doors for Swiss lawyer as Vatican tackles corruption

Rene Bruelhart spoke to the Financial Times about his role as the Vatican's chief anti-money laundering enforcer and about his co-operation with his next door neighbour, Pope Francis.

The 39-year old said that his job has been made far easier by the arrival of the Argentinian Pope two years ago. Speaking of his work, he said: '[It] has changed tremendously, I really find open doors. I have just come back from the US, and politicians, people from the private sector, really top level, are saying: if I can help, I am happy to help.'

Mr Bruelhart joined the Holy See in 2012 from Liechtenstein where he had been head of the financial intelligence unit. He had there worked on returning assets to Iraq that had been appropriated by the regime of Saddam Hussein. Source: Financial Times
