Privacy groups battle for 'right to be forgotten'

The European Commission and the Information Commissioner's office have played down calls by privacy groups to have the right to be forgotten online by claiming the move is unrealistic and could damage the economy.

Privacy: accountability is key

At a Westminster debate this week ICO deputy commissioner David Smith said that the right to be forgotten was a step too far, adding: ‘The right to be forgotten worries us as it makes people expect too much.’
Technology website V3 reports that Mr Smith said the real issue should be the ‘right to object’ to how personal data is used.
EC data protection supervisor Peter Hustinx labelled the right to be forgotten as ‘an overstatement’ while agreeing that transparency, accountability and responsibility were the most important factors.
