Plaintiff law firms are targeting superannuation disputes - an area which can be resolved by conciliation in Australia - in another sign of a worldwide trend for lawyers to get a foot in the door in lawyer-free resolution arenas.

After attending a roundtable convened by 'Super Review', Lawyers Weekly comments that 'The ability for superannuation disputes to be resolved via conciliation or the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal is being undermined by the increasing involvement of lawyers.' Noting a similar trend in Ireland, Michael Williams, author of 'Serving the people?', says that 'lawyers began to enter the field of conflict resolution' in mediation in the 1990s and shows how significantly they affected the field since then. With lawyers involved, the two parties got 'very limited opportunities' to negotiate face-to-face and the involvement of lawyers pushed up costs. Source: Lawyers Weekly
