Recruitment survey: market picks up as mergers drive demand

Global recruitment at law firms and in-house legal departments has surged at a time when staff are looking for fresh opportunities, according to recent research.

Recruitment: fresh opportunities

According to a study from British-based recruitment agency Michael Page International, employment opportunities are rising as there is a shortage of experienced professionals across most levels, web site Australasian Legal Business Online reports.
The report adds: ‘High profile mergers and new market entrants are driving the creation of new roles, causing greater candidate movement.’ With an increase in demand and movement, salaries are also expected to rise up to 10 per cent.

Bimodal

Meanwhile, in a New York Times web site blog, Catherine Rampell maintains that in the legal recruitment market, median salary figures do not account for much.
Ms Rampell said: ‘Salaries have for years been “bimodal,” meaning they’ve generally sorted into two levels: the $160,000 earned by first-year associates at big, white-shoe law firms, and the $40,000-to-$65,000 range earned by lawyers at smaller law firms, government jobs and so on.’
